Assistant county prosecutor announces law director bid

Assistant Athens County Prosecutor Patrick Lang announced yesterday he plans to run for the Athens city law director position now filled by Republican Garry Hunter.

Lang, a Democrat, will face off against local attorney William Safranek in the May democratic primary. Hunter, law director since 1977, also has announced he will seek re-election, but no other Republicans have announced they will run against him in the primary.

Lang said yesterday that voters have told him they are dissatisfied with the fact that Hunter serves as the Athens city law director, Nelsonville city attorney and a private practice lawyer. Lang, who does not run a private practice, said he would not represent any cities other than Athens.

I think it's important that we have a law director that will spend more time in the office

be more accessible he said. After 30 years I think it's time for a change.

Hunter has said previously that his multiple roles don't cause any conflicts of interest, and it is common for lawyers to represent multiple cities.
