Broken Chords: Music for Midterm stress

The walls are moving in, my mind is jumping and thoughts of a sweet, blissful death providing serenity from the madness that is the middle of the quarter become more attractive with every passing minute.

Perhaps a serendipitous quirkiness will occur in the event of my demise, allowing me entry into the infamous Darwin Awards.

Anyhow, I think I'll stick around. Besides, I often wonder how it will happen naturally ' everyone loves surprises.

What isn't a surprise in this sea of work we find ourselves treading? Hours upon hours of studying can take its toll, especially when that tight pressure where the skull and spinal column conjoin serves as an ominous reminder of the impending doom coming down like John Henry's hammer.

In these dire times, relief is needed. What better than music?

If you'd like to listen to the plight of man in order to feel better about yourself, pop in the album Velvet Underground & Nico and skip to track two, I'm Waiting For The Man. This simple, raw rock is one of nihilism, worthlessness and drug-induced anxiety. The constant, unchanging rhythm suggests the rapid heartbeat of a junkie waiting for his fix.

Lauryn Hill's War In The Mind from MTV Unplugged will, ironically enough, free your mind from the shackles of erudition, allowing the realization that tests and grades don't hold water in the grand scheme of things.

In order to disappear listen to Led Zeppelin's Rain Song. The 7-minute-39-second, ethereal love epic will place the listener in the middle of the mind's eye. Peaceful, comforting images will flood the imagination like a soothing warm bath.

If you want to progress your hysteria, play The Black Keys. This dynamic duo kicks your butt with hard-knocking drumbeats and fuzz-droned guitar riffs with a distilled blues feel.

If you merely want something beautiful, play anything and everything, because all music is beautiful. What is so great about it, in these times of vapid, mind numbing labor, is the momentary, fire from the sky, shot to the heart release!

Now buckle down and bite the bullet. Just pray the back of your head stays intact.
