Athens City Law Director Garry Hunter announced yesterday he will seek re-election to the post he has held since 1977.
Hunter, a Republican who earns an annual salary of $54,624, will face at least one Democratic challenger in November. Local attorney Bill Safranek announced last month he also would run for the law director position.
Hunter, who runs a private practice and serves as Nelsonville's city attorney, is the lone Republican in a city government dominated by Democrats. He said in an interview yesterday that his political party has not hampered his ability to work with other officials because he always has run a non-partisan office.
I think most local government can only run if you function as a non-partisan office
he said.
Hunter said his campaign would focus on adapting to state and national laws that affect local government and reaching out to Ohio University students. Hunter said his office has always been student friendly, usually operating with about two or three OU interns and trying to help students have their criminal records expunged. 17
