Editorial: One thing at a time

The city of Athens is considering adding lights to its skate park, which would supposedly make it the first lighted outdoor skate park in the state.

Lighting would make the spot safer ' especially important after the news of an attempted abduction in the area last week. It would also provide an alternative form of sober entertainment, which explains why Ohio University has pledged $15,000 to the project, despite the overwhelming budget deficit.

These are interesting ideas that could result in something tangibly convenient ' but not without funds first.

The skate park additions would be part of a larger project, which include a $3.2 million indoor aquatic facility and a second dog park.

It seems City Council is following in OU's footsteps of devising big plans to spend money that they do not have. Providing safe spots for high school and college students to congregate is important, but the financial means to accomplish this are out of the city's grasp.

Even the Athens Parks and Recreation director admitted that such undertakings would probably not be feasible in the near future.

Let's worry about present problems before undertaking new ones. Must we mention the Comprehensive Plan again?Editorials represent the majority opinion of the Post executive editors.
