Ohio University is striving for recognition as a research institution, but printing quotas for graduate students have some wondering if the university is fulfilling their research needs.
Graduate Student Senate unanimously passed a resolution at tonight's meeting requesting that the free-of-charge printing quota for graduate students be increased from its current 50 pages per month to 200 per month.
The current free-of-charge printing quota ' 50 pages per month and charges 5 cents for additional pages ' is uniform for graduate and undergraduate students, but is not realistic for graduates, said Andrew Pusateri, a College of Education senator and co-sponsor of the resolution.
Pusateri added that he spends an extra $100 to $200 per quarter on printing.
With lengthy dissertation and thesis requirements and more assigned online readings than undergraduates, graduate students clearly have a need for an increased quota, said Sam Rossi, a College of Arts and Sciences senator and resolution co-sponsor.
It's a principle that the university wants a research institution
and this quota isn't supporting that Rossi said.
The resolution also suggests that the university consider allowing students who have not met their monthly allotment to carry over unused pages into other months.
To change this would be a really great thing that would allow graduate students to keep doing research said Jen Goodlander, senate's commissioner for LGBT affairs.
Senate also passed a resolution requesting that the new residence hall on South Green be named for Black Americans who have made a difference at OU. The resolution recommends honoring OU graduates that include Edward and Mattie Berry, who pioneered two successful Athens businesses, or Alvin and Ada Adams. Alvin was prominent Civil Rights Movement journalist and Ada founded the Chesterhill-based Multicultural Genealogical Center.
The resolution states that the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium is the only building on campus named for Black Americans.
