Indoor track & field: Bobcats find unexpected success at Buckeye invite

Austin Schiele ran faster than he thought he could this weekend.

The Bobcats finished their regular season at the Buckeye Invitational and chalked up three victories along the way.

Schiele ran the 1-mile and finished first with a time of 4:10.96, a time he didn't know he could run.

I had no idea how fast I was going until I looked up at the screen and it said 4:10

and that was faster than I thought I could go Schiele said. I just ran the race. I didn't worry about anything else and it turned out to be a pretty quick time.

Coach Clay Calkins said that Schiele's run was the highlight of the day.

That was probably the performance of the meet

Calkins said. That was the standout

and he just did a great job.

Schiele said that he saw some other good performances, but he thinks his stood out because it was unexpected.

No one was expecting me to do that; I didn't expect myself to do that

Schiele said.

Calkins said Schiele's first-place finish was great for the team, along with first-place finishes from Kevin Kappers in the 600-meter run and Brittany Vinson in the long jump.

Scott Mayle turned out another notable performance, hitting the NCAA provisional mark in the 60-meter dash for the second time this season with a time of 6.71.

The Buckeye Invitational was the last chance for the Bobcats to tune up for the Mid-American Conference indoor championships, which are this coming weekend. Calkins said the efforts put forth by the team this weekend are a good sign.

It's hard to say where we'll end up

where we'll place in the MAC

Calkins said. With the performances going in the right direction and people getting better marks

hopefully we'll do well there.

Schiele said that for a MAC runner it all comes down to next weekend.

Running well this week

it helps. It definitely gives me that edge that I'll need to run my fastest

Schiele said. I'm still going to stay focused and do what I've been doing and hopefully everything turns out well.

The Bobcats' season will culminate this weekend in Akron at the MAC Indoor Championships. The event will start Friday and continue through Saturday.
