Ladysmith Black Mambazo to grace Mem Aud stage

Two-time Grammy-award winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, will bring South-African culture to Athens during tonight's performance at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

The eight-member a-cappella singing group is touring to promote its newest album, Long Walk to Freedom.

According to the group's Web site, www.mambazo.com, the name comes from a variety of influences. Ladysmith is the name of the hometown of Joseph Shabalala, the group's founder. Black refers to oxen, the strongest of all the animals. Mambazo is the Zulu word for axe, referring to the group's ability to cut down any competition.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo has preformed all around the world, including such places as the 1996 Summer Olympics and two Nobel Prize ceremonies. The group has also performed in front of people such as the Queen of England, presidents and the Pope.

The group, mentioned as a favorite of Lindsay Lohan's character in the 2004 movie Mean Girls, will perform at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Mem Aud. It is free and open to the public.
