Michael Flatley's Irish step dancing to grace Mem Aud

A splash of Irish culture will come stepping into Athens when Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance performs tonight at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

Irish step dancing has become known worldwide because of hits such as Lord of the Dance and Riverdance.

Celtic Dancing Webring, www.albee.org/celticdance/index.htm, is a Web site devoted to all things related to Irish culture. According to the site, step dancing originally was characterized by very little movement. Participants stood with a closed-off posture, keeping their legs together and arms at their sides. In this type of dance, people would perform no high kicks and minimal turning.

When larger stages were built in the 1950s and 1960s, step dancers began to expand their techniques to allow greater freedom in their movements.

Irish dancers will grace the stage tonight to perform Lord of the Dance. This musical extravaganza is filled with strength, precision and accuracy of movement. The story is about good concurring evil, love winning out over lust and fighting for what is right. It also features live Celtic music.

Lord of the Dance will be performed tonight at 7:30 in Mem Aud. Tickets are $30 for the main floor and lower balcony and $25 for the upper two balcony tiers and are still available.
