Your Turn: Parents should look at the big picture with HPV shots

Apparently some people do not think it is important to prevent cancer. I was amazed to read in the article, Company pushes for preteen HPV shots

that the biggest worry for some people was encouraging premarital sex.

It seems as if parents would rather risk the chance of their daughters getting cancer than be realistic about sex. Most girls will probably not be sexually active when they are given the vaccine, but it is very possible they will be a few years later. I think Cathie Adams is overlooking the big picture. Yes, pharmaceutical companies will be benefiting if these vaccines are required, but so will all the girls who will be given this vaccine.

It is disappointing to constantly be reminded of the ignorance surrounding women's health issues. It is simply a fact that these girls will soon become young women who are sexually active and run the risk of contracting HPV. Why not prevent their chances of getting cancer before they are even exposed to the virus? Isn't that why the vaccine was made in the first place?Andrea McClurg is a senior organizational communication major. 17
