Your Turn: Tenure, family balance difficult to achieve, but not a choice

I would like to thank you for bringing discussions about the tenure process in to the public arena, and I am flattered that you interviewed me for the article that appeared today.

I would like to correct one comment for clarity, however. I did not say that a faculty member would need to choose between tenure and a child; rather, I said that it becomes difficult to complete work required for tenure when other obligations also call. I did say that it is difficult to get writing done (for instance) when a three-year old (for instance) is pulling at your leg.

As many colleagues here at Ohio University and other universities have demonstrated, it is possible to attain tenure and enjoy a full private life ' including taking care of family and other personal obligations. The balancing act required at some times, though, can pose significant obstacles, and may involve choices that are at times painful and difficult, and should not be played down.Benita Blessing is a professor in the history department.
