Editorial: Quartering the market

Ohio University recently has explored the idea of making the jump from quarters to semesters. Perhaps learning from their previous gaffes, the administration has emphasized input from students and faculty, a great sign. Such an action should not be taken without support from the people who will be most affected by the decision; we applaud the administration for taking the time to listen and care about what other people think. It's a nice sign after a few difficult years.

What the students, faculty and staff desire should become the university's decision. Now that it has opened the doors for input and consensus building, it cannot close them.

It does seem less than prudent to be talking about such a major change at a time when budgets are tight and the university claims not to have the funds to keep men's swimming, indoor and outdoor men's track teams and women's lacrosse. If the consensus is to make the switch from three 11-week quarters to two 16-week semesters, it should not be implemented until the university is more economically stable. Other problems need to be fixed before the university should consider a change. Class schedules, class offerings, tuition, room and board -
