The name Scott Mayle has almost become synonymous with wins in Ohio track and field.
Mayle will travel to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend, and he has been getting ready just like he has for every meet.
I try to prepare the same
so I don't make it bigger than it is said Mayle, who was named the Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week.
Because this is the last season for men's indoor track, the marks that Mayle has already left in the record books will stand. He holds the record in the 60-meter dash with 6.71 seconds and in the long jump at 7.95 meters. His long jump set a new conference meet record as well, when he set it on Feb. 24 at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
This will mark Mayle's fourth trip to a NCAA event, and he said he is just as anxious this time around.
It's just as exciting as it was before said Mayle, who is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA long jump. I kind of expect that I'm going to go
but you just never know.
At this season's MAC Championships Mayle earned the 2007 MAC Most Outstanding Field Performance award. He earned the MAC Field Athlete of the Week on two occasions this season.
Although he does not like to predict how well he will do, Mayle said he'd like to leave a legacy here at Ohio.
(Being a senior) adds to it a little bit
Mayle said. Since I have been on long jump I've wanted a national championship.
The meet will take place today and tomorrow and is hosted by the University of Arkansas.
