Students accused by the RIAA of sharing copyrighted music will face disciplinary action from judiciaries in addition to possible legal action from the Recording Industry Association of America.
Twenty students and one mother attended an information session held yesterday for students faced with pre-litigation settlement letters from the RIAA. Attendees received information about the situation and asked questions of university officials.
A committee of students and university administrators will decide what disciplinary action the students, who are already faced with lawsuits unless they pay thousands of dollars to the RIAA, will face.
The university has traced 50 Internet provider addresses to 80 students. Resident Directors are required to hand-deliver RIAA notices and a cover letter from the university to those students.
Essentially this matter is between them and the RIAA
said Richard Carpinelli, associate vice president for Budget and Operations. Neither the university nor the Center for Student Legal Services can represent students faced with RIAA lawsuits. 17
