The Bobcats will continue their 13-game road trip when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to participate in the Winthrop/Adidas tournament, which starts today.
Pitcher Michelle Sauter said that she was looking forward to getting on the field.
We're actually pretty excited to go on the road. It's supposed to be warmer weather
Sauter said. It will be nice to get some games in.
The 'Cats (5-8) face Winthrop, South Carolina State and the College of Charleston in the fourth tournament they have played in this season, the first outside the state of North Carolina.
Ohio has played every one of their games in the tournament format this year and with mixed results, but shortstop Amanda Sacks said that playing in tournaments isn't necessarily about the wins and losses.
(The tournament format) kind of tests your abilities and it preps you for the season especially for our doubleheaders
Sacks said. It kind of gets you into the mentality of playing game after game and being ready and prepared.
The one thing that hinders the Bobcats ' like many other Northern teams ' is the bad weather that already stopped Ohio from participating in its home opener and the Southern Classic Tournament.
If the weather doesn't start cooperating soon, coach Jill Matyuch said that it could start to have some long-term effects.
We just want to play games. We want to get innings in
Matyuch said. We want to test our players
so we know what their capabilities are and we know what to work on when we get into the MAC Tournament.
Ohio faces some tough opponents this weekend including a Winthrop (15-8) team that has already knocked off Georgia, which was ranked No.18 when the Eagles beat them.
Sacks said that the team's success will depend on how they perform in early innings.
Last weekend we came out and hit really well in the first couple of innings. I think that's a big thing for us to do
Sacks said. It gets us pumped.
