Track and field: Bobcats begin outdoor season with top finishes

The Ohio track and field team opened its outdoor season Thursday traveling to the Wake Forest Open.

Coach Clay Calkins said it was a good way to begin the season and it was a refresher after weeks of not competing.

Kari Summers landed a top spot for the Bobcats in the 5,000-meter run. Carime Reinhart also did well taking third in the 10k run.

Craig Leon had the highest finish on the men's side snatching second place in the 10k run.

It was a good meet for opening up this time of year

Calkins said. We are just getting ready for next week and the Southern Cup.

Next on the agenda for the Bobcats is the first home meet of the season. Ohio will host the Southern Cup here in Athens all day this Saturday.

Mayle takes fourth at nationals

Back on Mar. 10, Scott Mayle wrapped up his indoor career with a trip to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Mayle took fourth in the long jump with a mark of 7.78 meters. The place earned him the title of All-American, which is awarded to the top eight finishers at the event.

I think it was great to see him come through Calkins said. It's nice to him finish off his senior year of indoor track like that.

This was the first trip to the national indoor competition for Mayle, but his fourth NCAA appearance overall.

Mayle is the first Ohio indoor athlete to be named an All-American since 1998 when Jackie Conrad took the title in the 10k run. The last male athlete was Greg Jones in the shot put in 1988.
