Your Turn: Journalism professor 'went above and beyond' the job

Dear Dr. Debbie Gump;

The members of the student media want to thank you for your patience and mentorship both in and outside of class. Though you will no longer be a faculty member at Ohio University, your advising and support will always influence our work in Athens and our future journalism careers.

In class, you made us want to go beyond our abilities. In our daily work as journalists, we reference things you've taught us. We will never forget that despite our errors, we were still treated and respected as journalistic peers, and you were always willing to listen to our ideas about news judgment.

We composed this letter comprising our sincere gratitude. We will push ourselves beyond weak headlines. And we will always throw down the gantlet to run the gauntlet against a gamut of errors that can exist inside a newsroom.

From morning to late afternoon, the door to your office has always been open and waiting for any student with a simple question or journalistic dilemma. Those who took that opportunity have never forgotten your advice.

We know the difficulty of being a good professor, and you went above and beyond that calling. We can only dream of bringing the same enthusiasm to our jobs and the people we serve in the future. We are sure the graduates you also have touched would say the same thing:

Thank you for being a great teacher and a wonderful mentor. You were one of the professors who greatly influenced our education at Ohio University, and because of you, we will be more prepared in the future. We hope we can make you proud by using your lessons on life and writing in our time here and as we enter the professional world.

Sincerely,

Ohio University Student Media
