Administrator will leave Ohio for provost position at his alma mater

Ohio University's associate provost for graduate studies will head west to Colorado at the end of this year after spending 20 years at the university.

Michael Mumper, associate provost for Graduate Studies and 1976Adams State College alumnus, will begin his job as provost at his alma mater on July 1, the start of the fiscal year.

It's a better opportunity for me. I'm not leaving anything unhappy about (OU)

Mumper said. When my old school called up and asked if I'd like to be provost I just couldn't say no.

The provost position is considered the second in command at Adams State, and Mumper would have responsibility for the campus in the president's absence. Mumper will use his experience in developing new programs in enrollment management, recruitment and retention issues from OU in the new position.

Mumper began at OU in 1987 as a faculty member in the political science department before taking a position as department chair in 1999. In 2003, Mumper took the associate provost of graduate studies position.

Mumper has a $121,398 annual salary at OU, and he will see a pay raise when he leaves for Adams State, though he would not disclose the salary.

With the change of scenery, Mumper will also see a change in the type of campus for which he will work.

It's a very different kind of campus he said. It's what you call an access campus G

lots of lower-income students.

Adams State has only about 2,600 students on campus, compared to more than 20,000 students ' about 3,150 of which are graduate students ' at Ohio University.

OU Provost Kathy Krendl said she will appoint an interim associate provost for graduate studies and interim vice president for research before July 1, but despite having received nominations from Mumper and others, she does not have a particular candidate in mind.

Once someone is hired on an interim level, the university will begin the typical process for selecting administrators, beginning with a search committee that will make recommendations to Krendl, who has the ultimate decision.
