Baseball: 'Cats fail to recover from early deficit, fall to 0-10 in road games

Dan Weiss had a second inning that he would like to forget.

With the Bobcats trailing 2-1, Weiss allowed four runs on three hits, retiring only one of the five batters that he faced.

The four runs allowed by Weiss in the inning pushed Duquesne's lead out to 6-1, and the margin proved insurmountable as the Bobcats (12-17, 2-5 Mid-American Conference) fell 8-6 to the Dukes yesterday.

Weiss was starting on just one day of rest after pitching 2.1 innings in game three of Sunday's tripleheader, but coach Joe Carbone said the short break was not a factor in Weiss' outing yesterday.

He got two strikes on guys and didn't put them away

Carbone said. He was fine (to pitch).

The Bobcats responded to Duquesne's big second inning with a three-run fourth. Catcher Chris Klimko's two-run home run cut the margin to 6-3 to start the frame. Later in the inning, first baseman Marc Krauss sliced the lead to 6-4 with his 11th double of the season, scoring Dusty Hammond.

Krauss had another big afternoon for the Bobcats, totaling four hits and two RBI. Outfielder Jeremie Rehak was the only other Bobcat to record a multi-hit game with two hits and an RBIs.

Carbone said that the pair, who tallied six of the Bobcats' 10 hits, has provided consistency in the lineup, a rarity for freshmen.

They have both made adjustments in their swing and they have been putting in practice what (assistant) coach (Scott) Malinowski has stressed in practice Carbone said. They have both earned playing time.

After Weiss left the game, the Ohio bullpen allowed only two runs and five hits over the final 7.2 innings of play.

I thought those guys threw the ball fairly well Carbone said.

The Bobcats had one final chance in the ninth with Hayden Johnston at first and Jerod Yakubik representing the tying run at the plate, but Yakubik grounded out to drop the Bobcats' road record to 0-10.

No Stiffler

Ohio outfielder Matt Stiffler was held out of yesterday's contest after receiving a cortisone shot for his knee.

He had to take a couple days off

but he will be all right for this weekend

Carbone said. He hasn't been playing at 100 percent for the past three weeks.

Former Bobcat makes MLB squad

Former Ohio third baseman Adam Fox had been added to the Texas Rangers 40-man roster, marking the first time that an Ohio player under Carbone has made a major league roster.

Fox played for the Bobcats from 2001-2003. He was named to the MAC First-Team in 2002 and 2003. Fox, who is tied for second in career home runs (38) and doubles (53) in Bobcat history, was selected in the 10th round by the Rangers in 2003.

I couldn't be happier for Adam and his family

Carbone said. We're very proud of Adam.
