The younger half-brother of Nelsonville teenager Andrew Riley is awaiting new counsel after a disagreement between his parents and attorney ended an arraignment hearing in Athens County Juvenile Court yesterday.
Aaron Miller, the legal counsel for Riley's 11-year-old half-brother, requested a guardian ad litum after the juvenile's parents disagreed with a recommendation concerning the charges of burglary and receiving stolen property. Miller explained that the guardian serves as appointed counsel when the original counsel declines to execute the wishes of a client.
Athens County Assistant Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said that the parties had reached a plea bargain; however, Miller elected not to go forward. Miller said that he likely would not represent the juvenile at any future hearings.
The 11-year-old's charges are related to the alleged crimes of his older brother. Riley, 13, faces 26 felony and misdemeanor charges. Juvenile Court Judge Robert Stewart stipulated that the defendant is to have no contact with Riley.
The juvenile is scheduled for adjudication, the process of determining if he is delinquent or unruly, May 25.
