A revision of Gov. Ted Strickland's proposed education budget has changed the estimated funding figures for some Athens County schools. Although Athens City School District and Federal-Hocking School District will see no change in state aid in 2008, the districts will receive about $34,000 and $60,000, respectively, in additional aid in 2009.
Alexander Local School District and Nelsonville-York City School District each will receive about $70,000 more in state funding during the next two years because of budget changes. Trimble Local School District will receive a state aid increase of more than $300,000 above its current funding in each of the next two years. However, the revised numbers give the district a total of $78,000 less than in the original proposed budget.
The original budget was pulled from the governor's Web site and corrected after one school district was mistakenly allocated an increase of more than $10 million in state aid.
According to initial state funding estimates, Wyoming City School District in southwestern Ohio was to receive a more than $5 million increase in state funds in each of the next two years, nearly doubling its annual state aid.
The error occurred because the district was listed as having 1,500 career technical students, who receive more state funding than normal students, Wyoming Superintendent Gail Kist-Kline said.
The actual number of career tech students was closer to 15
she said, adding that the district has only about 1,900 students.
New proposed school funding figures correct the error and take into account new tax information, Strickland spokesman Keith Dailey said. The revised budget calls for a $160 million increase in state aid in 2008, about $11 million less than in the original proposed budget, he said. 17
