Sensual art exhibition examines allure in anatomy

While the phrase erotic swellings conjures images of bad pornographic videos, the ceramic exhibit of the same name is a study of the beauty of nature and biology.

Graduate student Elissa Cox, the show's creator, said in a news release that the aim of the event is to overwhelm the senses with visual excess.

The exhibition is a merging of large forms in the shape of human anatomy with various other materials such as artificial foliage, wax, latex and sequins. The larger-than-life-sized ceramic figures are adorned with textures that are not normally associated with the body parts to which they are attached. This leads to a delicate and pleasing juxtaposition of natural beauty and sublime fleshiness

Cox said.

Just as from nature I am drawn to the openings and insides of the human body how the wet

pinkish surface of organs and tissues that hold and encase our innards perfectly in their complexities are seductive

as they simultaneously repulse us with rawness

she said.

The exhibition Erotic Swellings will be held today through April 21 at the Ohio University Art Gallery in Seigfred Hall room 536, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A reception will be held tonight at 6 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
