Timeline of LGBT events in Athens

1977

The Gay Peoples Alliance is created by students and Athens residents at United Campus Ministries.

1983

The First Gay Awareness Day at UCM hosted by the student organization GALA, which became Open Doors in 1988.

May 1991

Open Doors hosts its First Coming Out Week, which is later changed to Fall Quarter in 1993 to coincide with National Coming Out Day.

February 21, 1992

The LGBT Affairs Commission of Student Senate is created.

February 26, 1992

LGBT Commissioner Mickey Hart creates the first Gay Pride Day to increase visibility.

April 11-15, 1992

The LGBT Affairs Commission sponsors the first Visibility Week.

1996

Visibility Week is changed to Pride Week.
