Track & Field: Distance runners fare well at all-state meet

Long-distance races treated the Ohio women's track team well.

Carime Reinhart and Rachel Beakas finished first and second in the 5,000-meter run at this weekend's All-Ohio Championship. The pair's 18 combined points from that race helped the Bobcats earn fifth place out of 15 teams at the event.

Reinhart had a time of 17:07.74, while Beakas came in at 17:34.48. Reinhart was the only Bobcat to win an individual event.

The 10,000-meter run saw two Ohio runners place in the top three, as Annie Beecham and Julia Weisenborn came in second and third, respectively. Beecham finished the run in 37:53.21, and Weisenborn crossed the finish line just over a second later at 37:54.89.

Ohio placed three competitors in the top 10 in the javelin throw. Chelsea Stephan came in second with a throw of 42.20 meter, while Melissa Gressick and Susan Plungis finished eighth and 10th, respectively.

Other notable performances included Melissa Wiley's fifth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.70; Jessica Tanner coming in fourth in the discus and fifth in the hammer throw; and Brittany Vinson finishing ninth in the long jump and 10th in the triple jump.

The Bobcats finished with 65.5 points, 109 points behind first-place Akron.

Men finish sixth

While the women got a majority of their team points in the longer races, the Ohio men scored most of theirs in the shorter races.

Curtis Leuenberger's strong finishes in the 200-meter and 100-meter runs helped the Bobcats finish sixth out of the 11 teams in the meet.

Leuenberger's time of 21.53 was good enough for second in the 200 meter, and he took fifth in the 100 meter with a time of 10.71. Leuenberger then helped the 100-meter relay team take fifth with a time of 42.16, the third-fastest time recorded in the relay this season.

Like the Ohio women, the men put three throwers in the top 10 in the javelin. Eric Bildstein, Zach Miller and Chris Campbell took second, fifth and sixth place respectively.

Craig Leon placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run, while Dan Bailey and Mike Gbenro came in third and sixth, respectively, in the triple jump.

With their 61 points, the Bobcats barely finished ahead of seventh-place Miami and lost to first-place Akron by 110.5 points.
