In celebration of Earth Day, the Ohio University Do It Yourself Club and The Wire are sponsoring DIY Fest 5, a weekend-long conference beginning tonight.
DIY Fest 5 is an attempt to educate people about DIY culture and independent sustainable alternatives through a series of workshops at The Wire, 21 Kern St. These workshops include gardening, ninja tactics, salve making and screen printing.
Along with scheduled workshops, there will be continual opportunities for participants to learn about converting grease into fuel and bike repair.
DIY Fest was created by the student group Positive Action in 2000 and continued annually until the group dissolved in 2004, said Erika Hedin, treasurer of the OU DIY Club. The club decided to bring the festival back after a three-year hiatus.
We want to inspire people that they have the ability to do just about anything themselves
she said.
While local residents will teach most of the workshops, several of the presenters are coming in from Pittsburgh and Chicago, Hedin said. There are also open blocks in the weekend's schedule for guerilla workshops open to anyone who wants to teach a workshop about a topic they enjoy. Those who are interested should contact the OU DIY Club.
A $10 to $20 donation is requested to cover the cost of food during the conference, but all the workshops will be free. This provides an opportunity for students to take classes that would normally cost a lot of money, Hedin said.
