Alex Jabs's commentary on sorority life is the epitome of ignorance. It has been some time since I have read a commentary so acidic and spiteful toward a student organization that benefits not only this campus, but the nation as a whole. Contrary to her knowledge based off of Will Ferrell movies, greek life is an enriching experience that greatly benefits those who participate. The occasional community service events that are made to create a good image are in fact extremely beneficial to the community. Delta Gamma's recent philanthropy event of Anchor Splash raised well over $1000 for charity.
According to the newly released grade reports, members of sororities have a 3.152 accumulative grade point average, and a 31.24 percent Dean's List membership. Both of these are higher than the regular student population. The nicknames she mentions are terrible, but I wonder how many of those nicknames are actually perpetrated by anti-sorority women such as Ms. Jabs. On a personal level, my sister is a sorority girl as well as many of my dear friends, and to characterize them as being obsessed with nothing more than drinking and sex is ludicrous and offensive. Hateful commentaries like these contribute to the gap between the greek community and the rest of the student population, when we should be working together to help improve our campus. One of the main goals of the greek community right now is to work hand-in-hand with the rest of the student population in order to better our campus, and publishing a ridiculously stereotype-filled hate letter is not helping Ohio University.
