Black alumni are returning to their alma mater this weekend for Ohio University's Black Alumni Reunion.
The triennial event is expected to bring in hundreds of alumni to Athens to celebrate the legacy of black students at OU, according to a university news release. That legacy began in 1828 when John Newton Templeton earned his degree as the university's first black graduate and the fourth black person in the nation to receive a degree.
The events begin today with a welcome reception, an OU family barbecue and a Reggae Dance Party at The Blue Gator, 63 N. Court St. The main events of the weekend include the annual Black Alumni Town Meeting and Brunch with campus leaders and the Inaugural Templeton-Blackburn Black Alumni Gala, both tomorrow.
At the town meeting, alumni will participate in a dialogue with campus leaders about the future of OU.
The Alumni Gala will feature OU alumnus and President Roderick McDavis as the keynote speaker and music from the Urban Jazz Coalition. The weekend will conclude with a Black Alumni Old School Dance at The Blue Gator.
