The Ohio University student hit by a truck in March was released from O'Bleness Memorial Hospital on Wednesday after suffering fractures in her leg and pelvic bone.
Misato Kawamura, a 19-year-old student from Chubu University in Japan, spent about six weeks at Grant Medical Center in Columbus and at O'Bleness and now is able to walk short distances with a walker, according to an OU news release. The university will provide transportation for Kawamura until she recovers fully.
She came to study English in the Ohio Program of Intensive English and will return to Japan at the end of July.
She came for a 17-week program and lost half of it in the hospital
said Gerry Krzic, the director of OPIE, in the release.
Kawamura was walking from Alden Library to Ellis Hall on March 30 when she was hit by an Athens-Hocking Joint Solid Waste District truck driven by Michael Gilbraith.
A judge in the Athens Municipal Court found Gilbraith guilty of backing without caution, and he was fined $99.
Dean of Students Terry Hogan said in the release that Kawamura's parents, who visited her two weeks ago and attended a reception with President Roderick McDavis, have supported her decision to stay through the summer. 17
