McDavis lists 4 candidates for board of trustees chair

The chairman of the board of trustees is on the way out and the president of Ohio University has nominated three women and one man as possible replacements.

In early May, OU President Roderick McDavis sent a list of four OU graduates to Gov. Ted Strickland to replace R. Gregory Browning, whose term expired May 13.

Strickland appoints trustees, and McDavis only recommends candidates. Browning is perhaps the highest official at the school as chair of the board of trustees, to which McDavis answers. Browning can serve as chair until July 12.

The candidate list includes three communication college graduates and one business school alumni.

Sandra J. Anderson of a law firm in Columbus, Ohio received her bachelor's from OU in 1973. She already serves on the Scripps College of Communication Dean's Advisory Council. Her name has the highest play in the letter and the most detailed description.

Heather Tate Fischer, co-owner of Fisher Foods Marking Inc. and business excellence award winner, also is among the candidates. Fischer's business and philanthropic contributions are concentrated in the Akron-Canton area. She graduated in 1979 from the communication college.

Valeria Haskell, a 1972 journalism school graduate, is the co-owner of a company that owns several gynecology facilities throughout the state. She also served as a board member for Ohio Citizens for the Arts, among other boards.

The only male nominee for the position, David A. Wolfort, a 1974 business school graduate, is on the College of Arts and Sciences Advancement Committee. Wolfort holds three positions in Olympic Steel, Inc., as president, chief operating officer and director, where he manages all sales, purchasing and regional operations.
