OU's 2nd 'Taste' serves up appetizing food, dance

Students, faculty and Athens residents had the opportunity to taste Australian vegemite sandwiches while listening to African drums and watching dances from Ghana last night in Ohio University's Grover Center lobby as part of International Week.

The Office of Education Abroad's second annual A Taste of Study Abroad offered information on Ohio study abroad programs and three third-party affiliated programs: Cultural Experiences Abroad, American Institute for Foreign Study and American Intercontinental University. More than 30 programs from countries around the world offered a taste of the culture through food samples, artifacts and OU students and faculty who have previously studied abroad, said Catherine Marshall, interim director of the Office of Education Abroad.

We are trying to reflect study abroad in a different way

Marshall said.

Compared to last year, there were more tables, more live performances and the Office of Study Abroad solely relied on students returning from study abroad, said Lori Lammert, study abroad advising coordinator.

In the past some food was shipped from the countries but not this year

she said. Students and faculty, who were responsible for their own food separate from OU Dining Services, did not spend more than $50.

Much of the food was prepackaged or made in homes and brought to the event. Ingredients and some of the authentic food was purchased from the New Oriental Market, 726 E. State St., Jungle Jim's Market Inc. in Cincinnati and grocery stores, both local and in bigger cities, Lammert said. A local Chinese restaurant provided food for the Design in Asia program, she said.

As one of the largest displays, the Ghanaian culture offered mango, jollof rice 'both beef and vegetarian ' chicken peanut soup and Milo ' Nestl+
