Palmerfest brings all the kids to the yard

It felt hot. Really hot.

At least that's what attendees at Palmerfest 2007 said they noticed.

Although the heat was conducive to sticky pits

said seventh-year OU student David Eves, partygoers appreciated the change in weather from previous years.

Usually it rains and there are mud fights said senior student Sean Morris, but this weather is great.

Ryan Schnear, a student from the University of Akron, said he was sweating beer by mid-afternoon.

Throughout the day, partiers battled the warm weather with water guns, buckets of water and plenty of water balloons.

Everyone having fun in the sun is one of the best things to do at OU said Josh Anderson, a 2006 graduate. Just relaxing with other people is great.

Athens Police Department officers made their usual appearance later in the day. An APD news release reported seven arrests Saturday night and Sunday morning but did not specify which, if any, of those were related to Palmerfest. There were 26 arrests in that time during last year's festivities.

There were police on bikes and guys on horses at night

sophomore party attendee Katelyn Belleville said yesterday. They wanted their presence to be known

but they weren't aggressive. They just wanted people to see them and know they were there.

The Ohio University Police Department was on hand by late afternoon. OUPD Chief of Police Mike Martinsen said Saturday that his officers wanted to come out early, before the party became too congested.

We wanted to touch base early and address hazards like people on the balconies and roofs

Martinsen said.

Anything we can do to prevent injuries is in OU and the students' best interest

he said.

The crowd on Palmer Street was ' aside from the sporadic balloon launching ' calm, and noticeably smaller than last year, said senior Allison Hitchner. Athens police traditionally do not give crowd estimates.

People are being responsible shuffling from party to party. They're being considerate of the fences

said junior Josh Gargiulo, a Palmer Street resident. Jim Hintz and the department of Off-Campus Living did a good job educating students on what we can and can't do at the parties and at all the fests.

The Office of Off-Campus Living provided Palmer Street residents with free mesh construction fences and suggested strategic placement locations for the fence posts, said OU junior Amanda Rowe. Off-Campus Living also informed residents about laws and regulations by holding a meeting a week before Palmerfest.
