Prosecutor reports bogus check scam in Athens

The Athens County Prosecutor's Office advises residents who receive check mailings from a Super Seven Contest not to cash the enclosed bogus checks because they will be civilly liable to the bank for the amount of the check.

The office received information Tuesday on a fake check mailing, which said individuals had won $250,000 from the Super Seven Contest

according to a news release from Prosecutor C. David Warren.

The letter states the recipient has won $250,000. The recipient is instructed to cash the check and pay about $3,000 of the $4,000 enclosed check back to the sponsors for the taxes on the winnings.

The White Collar Crime Unit of the prosecutor's office knows of two people who have received these letters but believes other Athens County residents have received the notices as well, said Tom Hooper, felony investigator for the county prosecutor.

The office has forwarded the information to the local FBI office, Hooper said.

Residents who receive one of these fake checks in the mail are asked to contact the White Collar Crime Unit at (740) 592-3208. 17
