University admits fewer students

Admissions for next year's incoming freshman class are lower than last year, reflecting more stringent selectivity, a university administrator said at last night's Faculty Senate meeting.

While the admissions office received 327 more applications than last year for 2007-08, it admitted only 10,328 undergraduate applicants, down 127 from last year, said Kathy Krendl, provost and executive vice president. The admissions numbers include international and nonresident students as well as incoming freshmen.

To date, 3,875 freshmen housing deposits have been paid, and next year's target size for the freshman class is 4,050 students, she said.

The admissions process was more selective this year, Krendl said, because it reviewed high school curriculum as well as GPA and ACT and SAT scores. Although the average GPA ' 3.32 ' was the same as last year's admitted applicants, average ACT scores rose from 23.6 to 23.74, she said.

At the meeting, Ohio University President Roderick McDavis addressed recent heated debates surrounding his efficiency as president, noting that faculty and staff should remember the example they set for students.

Our discourse ought to be done in a civil manner

McDavis said. I think there's a level of respect that we have to keep for each other.

McDavis also acknowledged the importance and validity of arguing against particular policies or decisions but commented on personal attacks.

It's quite another thing to argue against a person he said.

The senate voted to fill its executive positions and welcomed 16 new senators.

Sergio Lopez, representing mathematics, replaced Phyllis Bernt, who has held the position of Faculty Senate chairwoman for the past three years.

Senator Winfried Just, also representing mathematics, spoke on behalf of Lopez to second his nomination.

We want somebody who understands our predicament as faculty Just said. He understands what it means to do teaching

research and service and to combine all these things.

Senator David Thomas, representing film, was re-elected as vice chairman, and Tim Anderson, representing geography, was re-elected as secretary.

The senate also discussed a resolution to form a university committee to make recommendations to the administration about employee benefits and a resolution to clarify language in the Faculty Handbook regarding de-tenuring faculty members.
