Your Turn: Klatt's actions speak louder than current student senators' words

On April 18, Will Klatt announced his intention to run for Student Senate president. You might think that someone like me who isn't even a student on the Athens campus wouldn't care one way or another who ends up being the next Student Senate president, but you would be wrong. Since deciding earlier this year to relocate from the Eastern campus to Athens this coming fall, I've been paying attention to events on the Athens campus, and that's why I know that Will Klatt should be the next Student Senate president.

When I wrote a letter to the editor in February calling for President McDavis' resignation and calling for Student Senate to vote no confidence in McDavis, I received replies from two senators. One of these replies expressed alarm at what I had written and the other tried to assuage my concerns by assuring me that the General Fee Governance Council would ensure more shared governance. A column in the April 20 edition of The Post pointed out how well that's been going. Neither of the senators addressed my root concerns about McDavis' overall leadership or Student Senate's failure to fight hard enough for shared governance. And of course Student Senate never has taken a vote on its confidence in McDavis.

I also received a reply from Will Klatt. He expressed interest in my strategy to achieve shared governance and he assured me: We're not just going to complain about shared governance; we're going to do something about it. His actions since then have spoken even louder than his words, and I have no doubt that he would fight for shared governance until something definitive is finally accomplished. That's why OU students should go to the ballot box May 17 and cast their votes for Will Klatt, a Student Senate president who will truly represent OU students.'
