Your Turn: Wage gap not attributed to choice

Every Monday of this quarter without fail, I am left speechless by Ms. Herzog's columns. I must also admit that I am left anticipating her next inevitable piece of bull tripe. What have the feminists ruined this week? In her May 7 article, Evidence punches holes in the gender pay gap theory

Herzog attributes the wage gap to women's choices. She states that women choose to work low-paying jobs, and they choose to make decisions regarding familial matters that, in effect, cause them to receive lower pay than men.

While the wage gap might be closing, especially when comparing single working men and women, the real problem is grossly apparent when comparing working men to working women with children. Ms. Herzog feels that women put themselves in a position to earn less; what with their children to take care of, who can women blame but themselves for the wage disparity?

Taking care of one's family is not a choice Ms. Herzog ' it is a responsibility. Women are the ones shouldering this responsibility, not because they choose to do so, but because gender roles force them into that position. While families today rely on incomes from both parents, attending to children is still a priority ' and not one that most parents can brush off by hiring a nanny. When the time comes for parents to choose whose career will be sacrificed first, it is usually the woman's.

I believe you mean to say that women are forced into making career decisions that benefit their families. However, I would not be surprised if Ms. Herzog feels that career women with families who make choices to benefit their careers before their families are nothing other than selfish, child-hating feminists.
