Although Matt Stiffler is most often recognized for his consistent hitting and patience at the plate, the Ohio outfielder now has something to hang his hat on for his play in the field.
Stiffler, a senior who also plays for the Southern Ohio Copperheads, was named to the inaugural American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove Team. The team recognizes the best defensive player at each of the nine positions in the field among all Division I players across the country.
Stiffler did not commit an error all season and had seven outfield assists. He was the only player on the honorary team chosen from the Mid-American Conference.
Aside from his strong fielding, Stiffler was equally strong at the plate last season. He led the team in total hits (75) and triples (8), and was third in batting average (.359). He finished the season with a team-high 45 walks, which was just one walk shy of tying the Ohio single-season record for walks.Tailback named to prestigious list
Kalvin McRae, Ohio's workhorse tailback, was named to the Maxwell Award watch list earlier this week.
McRae was one of 64 players in Division I college football named to the list. The Maxwell Award recognizes the most outstanding player in America. Former Notre Dame and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn won the award last year.
McRae ran for 1,252 yards last season, which ranked second in school history for rushing yards in a season and set the all-time record for rushing touchdowns in a season with 15. He was named MAC East offensive player of the week four times last season and earned first-team All-MAC honors for the second straight season.3 named to Hall of Fame
