Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations Ralph Amos will leave Ohio University this month.
Amos is taking a job as executive director of the UCLA Alumni Association and assistant vice chancellor for alumni relations within UCLA's External Affairs department, starting Aug. 9.
A native Ohioan, Amos earned a bachelor's degree in International Affairs from the Ohio State University, where he also served as the OSU alumni association's assistant vice president for marketing. He came to OU in 1998 to assume his current position and earned a master's degree in public administration in 2004.
Our job was to build a world-class alumni association
said Amos, regarding his work at the university. And I think that's been achieved.
Vice President for University Advancement Howard Lipman will conduct a national search for Amos' successor, according to an OU press release. Lipman was unable to be reached for comment.
(Amos) has been highly sought-after as an administrator for years said Connie Romine, associate executive director of alumni relations. The UCLA job is a wonderful opportunity. He's going to a tremendous position.
While the university searches for a successor, Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann is investigating the relationships between Ohio institutions of higher learning and their preferred lenders to examine whether college officials have taken free trips benefited from stock deals
or taken gifts that some in the student-loan industry offer to financial aid officers
according to Dann's office.
Alumni Associations including those at Miami, OSU and OU have preferred-lender relationships with student-loan companies wherein the organizations receive funds for officially endorsing the companies' services.
The OU Alumni Association is engaged in a partnership with National Education Loan Network (Nelnet) that was enacted by Amos in 2003. Miami's Alumni Association has a similar partnership with Nelnet.
Amos said that the partnership helps to fund non-revenue-generating programs so as not to lay too heavy a burden on the university, and that Dann's investigation will find that it is effective in improving the lives of alumni.
