Robert Andrey, former associate athletics director for business and internal operations, reportedly abused his employee purchase card, which upon inquiry, prompted his June 19 resignation.
The university's Internal Audit office received an anonymous tip regarding Andrey's alleged misuse on June 6 through its ethics Web site. After further investigation, the Internal Audit office brought its preliminary findings June 18 to Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt, who arranged a meeting with Andrey for the following day. At the meeting, Andrey filed for his resignation.
(Andrey's) actions were not consistent with our mission and our core values
Hocutt said in an interview yesterday.
Further investigation is underway as the university pours over all of Andrey's expense records. The case has been handed over to the Ohio University Police Department, which issued a statement Tuesday saying that the situation is now a criminal matter.
Hocutt hired Andrey in Jan. 2006. Before coming to Ohio University, Andrey held a similar position for five years at American University in Washington D.C.
Andrey was part of a committee formed informally in the summer of 2006 to begin examining how to erase the athletics department's budget deficit. In January, Hocutt, along with Andrey and other committee members, announced that four sports ' men's outdoor and indoor track, men's swimming and diving and women's lacrosse ' would be cut to
combat budget concerns.
A search for Andrey's replacement is not being conducted, Hocutt said. Though he said it is unclear whether the position will exist in the future, Hocutt added that he is looking to have a plan ready in a few weeks. Andrey was paid a $74,200 salary. 17
