A commemoration service for Abhishek Singh, a 22-year-old graduate student from India, will be held today at 4:30 p.m. in Baker University Center Ballroom.
Singh died on June 30 when he was hit by an SUV while walking on the Richland Avenue Bridge. His body was discovered the following day in the Hocking River.
Singh was from Faizabad, India, and was working on a doctorate in physics. He had been studying at Ohio University since last fall.
Representatives from the Indian Students Association, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Dean of Students office, International Students and Faculty Services and other faculty members and students are organizing the service, said Amritjit Singh, an English professor at OU.
The memorial will include prayers from several faiths, but because Singh was Hindu, most of the service will follow Hindu tradition, Singh said.
The department is creating a scholarship in Singh's name, said Wayne Chiasson, Department of Physics and Astronomy administrator.
The department has raised over $15,000 so far and hopes to raise $25,000 to make it an annual undergraduate scholarship of $1,000, Chiasson said. Singh was a teaching assistant for undergraduate physics courses.
