There is a huge problem in our society and it is a problem that is only going to get worse unless we come together as a country and do something about it. This problem is called poverty.
Whatever happened to America being the land of opportunity? Whatever happened to going from rags to riches? Sure, some Americans do go from rags to riches and find their success and opportunity. However, when there is little or no chance to reach or work on gaining success, there is little chance to make it in this country.
We've all heard of the phrase, the rich are getting richer
while the poor are getting poorer but the majority of us who are rich, or at least live a comfortable life, choose to ignore it. Until we choose to walk in a poor person's shoes we will never realize how devastating it is.
The fact about poverty that is so unfortunate is that it will never change without help from the powerful. The powerful are the people with money; the government and the wealthy. People with power have a significant responsibility to help those in need.
Until this happens, things may never change. So next time you think about the unfortunate, take yourself out of your life of comfort and opportunity and step into their shoes, it might make you think a little different about your purpose in this country.Missy Cangiamilla is a senior Integrated Language Arts major
