Between The Lines: Check yourself before you wreck your bike, your life

Bicycle safety rests in the hands of cyclists more than in the city government. Although I welcome any city support for making the streets safer for cyclists, cyclists need to do their own part first.

I've been biking for the past seven years for transportation, exercise and fundraiser events, and in that time I have witnessed several bicycle accidents caused by careless and even malicious drivers. There are people in this town far more dedicated to their bikes than I, who have no doubt seen and experienced worse.

While drivers often need to be more considerate of bicycles on sidewalks and on the roads, cyclists of all interest- and skill-levels need to do more to deserve their respect.

Nighttime cyclists are the most ignorant and dangerous species of cyclist. Pedestrians should never have to fear a bicycle silently speeding down a dimly lit sidewalk, and nor should drivers struggle to make out a cyclist on the roads after dark.

Cyclists need to take responsibility for their own safety before seeking assistance from the city's coffers. It may involve spending $30 on a headlight and flashing lights for the rear of your bike, or simply making it a priority to get home by dusk. If you can't do those things, then walk your bike home. It's not just a good idea ' it's the law.
