Some days, the ball just does not find the goal.
No. 10 Ohio dropped its second game of the season yesterday, losing 2-1 to Albany in double overtime.
Despite getting some scoring chances in the overtime periods, the Bobcats (4-2) were unable to connect.
We didn't finish
Ohio coach Neil Macmillan said. In the first period of overtime we really took it to them. We had four really good opportunities. Three were smashed just wide of the post. On another day those might go in or at least one of them would.
Ohio got on the board first with a goal from Katelyn Shelley in the 16th minute. The Great Danes (4-2) responded quickly when Nicole Savage set up Michelle Simpson for a score off a penalty corner.
Ohio has executed well on corner opportunities for most of the season. However, against Albany, the Bobcats found themselves on the opposite end of the spectrum.
We missed a couple of opportunities
but we were getting good shots off
Macmillan said. We were executing pretty much what we wanted to. The way we've been playing up until now
we've been hitting inside the post instead of outside
and obviously
that makes a pretty big difference.
Despite outshooting Albany 6-3 in the first overtime, including four corner opportunities to none for the Great Danes, Ohio was unable to capitalize. In the 92nd minute, Savage once again assisted Simpson for the game-winning goal.
We fought really hard as a team
goalkeeper Jessie Martin said. They were just the better team today. It's frustrating to lose in double overtime. We had a lot of opportunities
but we just couldn't find the back of the net.
On Friday, the Bobcats defeated Holy Cross (1-3), 2-0. Estienne and Rachelle Coetzee picked up goals on corner opportunities to secure the Ohio win.
They both offer different skills for our set pieces with short corners
Macmillan said. Estienne has the ability to find her way into the post and finish close in off deflections. Rachelle is more someone who can hit it in and put it right in the corner of the goal.
Martin notched her second shutout of the season.
She just understands what she has to do in the back
