Non-conference schedules are understood to be college football's equivalent of a preseason. They're the handful of games that more often than not serve as tune-ups for big programs and money-making endeavors for smaller ones that often find solace in the fact the outcome has nothing to do with conference championships.
But they have everything to do with pride, national attention and respect. And several Mid-American Conference teams just blew a prime opportunity to gain some of each as they floundered in week two.
Miami left a win over Minnesota that was ripe for the picking dangling on the vine and with it a chance for the RedHawks to begin the season with two wins ' as many victories as they managed in all of 2006.
