Nerds Throughout History

A nerd feature isn't complete without homage to the great nerds of the past who have paved the way for the nerds of today. Here is a look at some of the revered nerds of ages past.

Doogie Howser, M.D. ' This Princeton-educated prodigy navigates the worlds of medicine and girls at the tender age of 16 in this series created by Steven Bochco.

Steve Urkel ' Would Family Matters have lasted as long as it did without Urkel? Definitely not. His high-pitched, whiny voice, huge plastic-framed glasses and red suspenders endeared him to millions. He is arguably the most well-known nerd in television.

Albert Einstein ' This real-life nerd had become a well-known and influential figure in popular culture. Responsible for the general theory of relativity and specifically for the equation E=mc2, Einstein is now an nickname conveying intelligence.

Andrea Zuckerman ' Some may doubt her inclusion on this list, but Andrea was a cool nerd in her early years on Beverly Hills, 90210. She was a sweet, social, attractive nerd who defied the stereotype of the time.

Smart Guy ' Girls wanted to date him. Guys wanted to be him. Okay, maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but Tahj Mowry shot to tween fame as 10-year-old imp T.J. Henderson on the show Smart Guy.

Velma Dinkley ' Velma solved most of the mysteries on the popular cartoon Scooby Doo and seemed to have a boundless knowledge of science, language and anything else the episode called for. Her orange sweater and big glasses were her trademarks.
