There's something about week two games for Ohio quarterbacks.
This past weekend, Brad Bower proved his ability to lead the Bobcat offense with a career-high 264-yard performance against Louisiana-Lafayette. The last time Ohio passed for more than 200 yards in a game was the second game of the 2006 season, when then-starter Austen Everson had his own career-best showing against Northern Illinois.
Bower went 17-of-28 and connected with eight different receivers, including a 44-yard touchdown pass to tailback Kalvin McRae, in Ohio's 31-23 win over the Ragin' Cajuns. Through two games, Bower has successfully spread out opposing defenses, completing passes to 11 players and improving the Bobcats' ability score through the air as well as on the ground.
It's obvious that Kalvin can be a threat as a runner
but we do need to establish some kind of threat in the throwing game coach Frank Solich said. I thought Brad did a very good job statistically in the game got the ball where it needed to get
threw some great passes.
Perhaps most crucial against Louisiana-Lafayette was Bower's ability to make key throws while the Bobcats trailed for three quarters.
On third-and-nine in the second quarter, the senior signal-caller completed a 64-yard pass to Justin Fitzgerald G
Solich said. Kalvin's a workhorse. He's the kind of back that'll carry 30-plus carries every game and hold up for you.
McRae now sits alone as second all-time in Bobcats history in career rushing touchdowns with 31 and career touchdowns with 35. Quarterback Kareem Wilson, who played for Ohio from 1995-98, holds the record in each category with 49. With 3,190 career yards, McRae remains in third place among all-time rushers, 792 yards behind record holder Steveland Hookfin, who played from 1995-98 as well.Odds and ends
Solich said strong safety Michael Mitchell, who did not make the trip to Louisiana-Lafayette this past weekend because of a shoulder injury, will practice this week and may be available for Saturday's game at Virginia Tech. Right guard Matt Miller exited Saturday's game briefly, but is ready to go against the Hokies as well.
