Your Turn: 'Post' omission of town's music scene strikes a heavy chord

Do something

it said, as I browsed through the Sept. 5 edition of The Post before class yesterday. The article targeted at underage and freshman students offered several alcohol-free alternatives for students around town, but did not mention Baker University Center and all of the alcohol-free programs the new student center offers. Aside from all of the great concerts coming up this fall in the Baker Theatre, the center offers great weekly programs: free midnight movies, Open Stage with Bruce Dalzell, the Thursday Night Coffeehouse Concert Series, comedians and so on. Athens does have a lot to offer outside of the party scene, specifically the thriving music scene and all of the original and talented musicians and bands. In terms of alcohol-free concerts, Donkey Coffee shows, poetry slams and open mics are all alcohol-free, as are the numerous events hosted at the Baker Center, which feature local, regional and national artists. I was just kind of bummed to see no mention of the music scene; one of the images used in the article was a record, which unfortunately didn't correlate to the article. These young minds need to be made aware of all the great music this town has to offer as it's a huge part of the culture that makes Athens a great place to live.
