Bicyclists don't get to ride into record book

The attempt to break the record for the world's largest bicycle parade at Hocking College on Saturday fell about 1,800 bikes short with only 133 bicyclists.

Taipei

Taiwan broke the largest bicycle parade record with 1 901 bicycles July 21 2007. Taipei has a population of 9.2 million and there are 60

000 people in this area

so in proportion we only needed 12 people to beat the record

said Marsha Lee Wikle, event organizer and co-chair of the HockHocking Adena Bikeway Advisory Committee.

The record was 145 bicycles in California when the anniversary event was being planned, but Taiwan set a new record in July. The Advisory Committee knew they were not going to break that record; the committee did not pay for a Guinness World Record official to fly in from London, Wikle said.

The record attempt was the popularized event for the 10th anniversary of the HockHocking Adena Bikeway, but many cyclists came to show their support for continuous funding of the bikeway.

There are two county grants already awarded to extend the bike trail, but it's a challenge to get money to support the bike path. Any money that is available is spent on improving the roads, Wikle said.
