Cable line fixed following 8 hours of outage, anxiety

Residents of Athens and Lancaster missed the first innings of the Indians' playoff game, worried about catching the second episode of Grey's Anatomy last night and couldn't check their e-mail for most of the day because of cable outages for about eight hours yesterday.

A construction accident in Lancaster around 11:30 a.m. yesterday cut one of Time Warner Cable's main fiber-optic lines, and residents were without digital phone, high-speed Internet and cable TV services, said Gordon Pettey, Ohio University's facilities management operations manager.

Technicians fixed the cut line by about 8 p.m., said a Time Warner customer service representative, but OU students weren't so sure if they were going to see their favorite programs.

Magen Mantle, a junior social work major, said she was worried about missing the new Law and Order.

When I woke up this morning

it (cable) was out she said.

The OU CATVision channels were operational, but Time Warner isn't the bulk provider for OU, Pettey said.

OU's Internet, which was functional through the entire day, is not provided through a commercial service provider.

Milt Miller, a senior geography major, was worried at 6 p.m. yesterday about missing the Indian's first playoffs game.

It just sucks Miller said. I can't watch the Indians' game.

Kurt Smith was also anxious about missing the playoffs, but the Internet outage also impacted him.

I have lots of online assignments I need to do tonight

said Smith, a political science major.

Sophomore Caylin Pugh, a classic civilizations major, said she was worried about not having access to course reserves and assignments on Blackboard.

Freshman Laura Brooks said she was gone most of yesterday, so she wasn't directly affected, but she said her roommates were affected.

Everyone talked about their frozen TVs

the art major said.

Senior Janell Ison said the outage wasn't a big deal to her.

I had to come over here (Baker University Center) and take an online math quiz

she said. But it wasn't too bad overall.
