It is no secret that Ohio University has developed a reputation for being a party school, but some sororities and fraternities have banded together to improve this image.
The Greek community created After Hours five years ago to add to non-alcohol related activities on campus. Tonight from 11 until 1:30 a.m. tomorrow, students can go to Baker University Center's fourth floor for free food.
On Fridays since 2002, Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol and the Interfraternity Council host After Hours. Every week, a different fraternity and sorority has 10 of their members volunteer to participate in program.
For After Hours
we get there around 10 p.m. and help prepare food at the Baker Center said junior Annie Porembski, social chair for Sigma Kappa. They usually serve hot dogs grilled cheese and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Sometimes we go up to Court Street and pass out flyers on the street and actually go into the bars to hand out fliers.
The advisor for GAMMA, Terry Koons, also associate director of Health Promotion, encourages students who may have been drinking to come out.
If [students] have been drinking that's fine
they can come and just hang out and get free food
he said.
Koons estimated that After Hours attracts about 500 people every week.
Many students say After Hours is a fun, cheap way to spend their time ' and sober themselves up before heading home.
A couple of my friends and I stumbled across After Hours
said sophomore Jane Lindahl. It's a great pit stop during the course of the night.
