Local union chapter gains support from OU faculty

ATHENS ' OU faculty members and a mayoral candidate showed up to support the picketers. About eight faculty members, including history professor Kevin Mattson, journalism professor Joseph Bernt and sociology professor Leon Anderson, joined the fired union members as they handed out fliers at College Gate. We know it takes a lot of work to keep the campus clean and safe

and we want to show our support Mattson said. Councilman Paul Wiehl, D-1st Ward, who is a mayoral candidate, also showed his support for the union members yesterday. The fliers, printed at University Printing Resources, contained a letter originally published in The Post that was written by Mattson and signed by 24 other faculty members. We're very grateful for their letter and for their support said Dave Logan, president of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1699. He said the faculty members had not yet decided whether they would join the protest for more than one day. We don't want the ones who are left to be overworked to the point where they can't do their jobs

Anderson said. The union has also received support in the past from student groups, including Students for a Democratic Society and College Democrats. This is the best day I've had in a long time

Logan said.
