I am forwarding to The Post a letter sent via e-mail to the Ohio University's Fulbright Scholars Association, which was carbon copied to the Interim Director of International Studies. I was disappointed that the issues raised in my letter were deemed unworthy of a response. I hope The Post will feel otherwise.
Dear Fulbright Scholars Association secretary,
My name is Eimi Lev. I am a doctoral student at Ohio University.
When I saw your e-mail invitation calling to attend A Night of Cultural Diversity on Sept. 21, I was amazed to discover that this event is scheduled exactly on the night of Yom Kipur. Yom Kipur is a Jewish holiday, known as the Day of Atonement. It is considered to be one of the holiest days of the Jewish year. A day of fasting, praying and soul searching.
I could not believe that your organization that aims to promote international awareness and friendship through educational
cultural and social activities at Ohio University is not sensitive enough or fully aware of the problematic schedule of your event. Clearly, celebrating a night of cultural diversity on Yom Kipur is not promoting cultural awareness and sensitivity, and creates a situation in which Jewish students and faculty will not be able to attend this event.
Sincerely,Eimi Lev.
